Painting Models

I’ve had to rely on models to paint and photograph from the beginning of my art career. All my life, I have stumbled over my words when trying to talk to beautiful women. Come on – through high school I was the D&D game master with all the nerdy friends. Art changed that. I just knew what I wanted to create, how to create it and had this self-esteem that was just there because of art. There was no getting nervous really – well the beginning of any meeting between to people that feels sort of random is a little bit strange but that evaporates pretty quick into a ‘let’s create art’ mode.

I have worked with Sunni a few times and decided to paint her for practice. This was not a commission but more of a practice painting. I think one problem I have is I have to keep painting regardless of what it is. The very action of painting is the art to me – the finished painting doesn’t mean I am finished painting, I usually don’t stop for the day I just keep painting something.

If you are interested in a painted portrait I would love to hear about it. Email me at info@robertwheater.com and we can start talking about your art today.

Boudoir Painting

I’ve painted hundreds of portraits and intimate paintings are among my favorite. The master painters and nearly every portrait painter for the last 500 years has created intimate paintings. The boudoir painting is definitely not for everyone but they are incredible works of art, especially in the bedroom or master bathroom.

Before thinking about a boudoir painting, think of it’s location. Where is it going to be displayed? I believe that boudoir paintings are meant for few people you know – if the painting is of you. I have done several anonymous looking paintings of clients that are focal point paintings in living rooms but they cannot truly tell – they know but the guests usually just think it is a great painting.

If you are interested in getting your boudoir painting either an original work of art from me or a commission painting of you contact me at info@robertwheater.com.

Painted Portraits | Ciann

I have held a camera in my hand for a long time and while I love painting, I am also a photographer. For quite awhile now I have worked on combining both traditional and digital means to create great art. So, my painted portraits have naturally evolved into one of my favorite pieces of art.

Kids Painted Portrait

It starts with photography. I create a photograph of my subject, usually a person but I have worked with pets, architecture, landscapes and just about everything else. From that point, I find a single image and begin sketching it traditionally to become familiar with the subject. From there I take it to digital painting software and create an image similar to the one above. It takes years of training, three different programs and artistic skill to do it. From there it goes to a special printer that puts the image onto a wood panel. Once I receive the panel, I work it again to create the final piece of art that will hang on your wall. My paintings begin in size from 8×10 and most are not larger than 30×40 but I can do larger if requested.

This unique painted portraiture is very difficult to create and takes a great deal of time to create that single perfect image. Contact me at info@robertwheater.com for more information.

Portrait Painting of my Wife

Once a year I try and paint a portrait of each of my family members. It’s not only a way for me to improve the art within my home but it is also a record of time and will be incredible to see decades from now. This painting is nearly complete – I still have work on eyelashes, hair and a little on the lips. There is some shadow work I need to finish too but I like to post work I am currently working on – whether it is done or not.

Fine Art Reproduction | The Reader

A couple months ago I was asked if I can recreate art. Yes, I can create reproductions of the masters on canvas. Here is a reproduction of Jean-Honore Fragonard’s “The Reader”. If it was painted before 1900, I would be happy to recreate paintings for you. Reproductions  are not 100% and I don’t want them to be – I prefer to think of them as a re-creation of an incredible piece of art. This was a four feet tall reproduction and nearly life size.

Reproductions of the Master Painters

If you would like to see old art recreated for your home I would love to hear from you. I also do original commissions from photographs. I can paint from old or new photographs but prefer to have at least 2-3 photos for references. Email me at info@robertwheater.com.

Painting of Angela

Painting from a single photograph is not as easy as having some multiples to work with. This painting is still being worked on but is a great example of painting from a photograph. This is not a commission but rather practice with skin tones, hair and light from a model that worked with me earlier this year.

Nearly Finished Painting of Angela. I sometimes like to share incomplete work – you get to see how the paintings develop.

Commissioning a painting is simple. Take a look at the commission link to the right in the navigation links.

If you would like to commission a painting, I would love to hear from you. Email me at info@robertwheater.com with your request. I paint large and small portraits. I can paint portraits for movie sets based on actors in movies and I have a great turn around time.

Painting of a Bride

A bridal painting is normally created from photographic references but can be painted from sittings. I have painted many commissioned portrait paintings and have a few private collectors of my art. I specialize in painting people, especially formal scenes. This painting is definitely one of my favorites and I have followed it up with a link to the time lapse of the painting. Thanks for visiting and I hope to paint for you one of these days.

Painting of a Bride (2012)

Here is the time lapse video of this painting. Digital painting has so many advantages. It is better for our environment, the final canvas made is also painted again – there are no differences in the final visual art but it still takes a lot of time to get right. Here is the big one though. This piece is fairly large – 24×30 on canvas and to afford an oil painting of this size would cost over $2000. That is the lowest price I have been able to find for oil paintings of my caliber. You can get this size painting from me for half that – not because it’s any ‘cheaper’ but because it took less storage, space, my tools were less expensive, my process cost less – but my final painting will last longer than oils will. My painting is more durable and higher quality. Here is a time lapse of this piece being created from a blank canvas to the final piece.
