Portrait Painting of my Wife

Portrait Painting

Painting of my Wife Kerry. By Robert Wheater. 2013.\

I snapped a snapshot of my wife with a digital camera. She was working out in the garden. I love painting portraits that seem like snapshots of life. I have painted her several times but my skill is getting so much better.

Portrait Painting

As I contacted everyone around me to paint portraits for my 100 paintings in 300 days project I ran out of people. I’m a bit of a hermit. All of my friends I’ve known almost all of my life. So, I resorted to finding people that were offering up their self-portraits as stock photography. Here is Jessica Dru. Her stock photography can be found at: http://jessicadru.deviantart.com/

My ability to paint has evolved incredibly over several projects that were created to get better. I focused my attention and willingness to learn into a direction and I didn’t look back. Here is where I am now. I am not offering prints of this painting. It was done as an educational project to get better.

Painting a Horse

A couple of weeks ago I got an email requesting a painting of a horse. I had painted a few in the past but none that was a part of my new process which involves my hand in ever part of the process. With my new process I create the reference images myself so that I am 100% that the colors will be correct. I am also a professional photographer and focus on making sure color is correct. I did a painting awhile ago where the eye color of my subject was blue but in the reference images the eyes were green. I will never make that mistake again.

I loved painting this horse but it started something else. Everyone that saw the painting loved it. I have several friends with horses and several were asking about prints or getting their horse painted. Needless to say by the end of the day I had a whole bunch of resources and I was starting a new series of painted horses. I will be creating twelve horses. I have two complete already.

So what started as a horse portrait painting commission turned into an entire series focused on horses. I was around horses pretty often when I was younger and in my summers and winters visiting my father in Wilson, Wyoming. Today, I don’t really have much contact with horses. But after painting one horse, I fell in love with painting horses.

Horse prints will be available for the entire series. I am also making limited prints of the horse series. These prints will be hand signed and numbered. There will only be 25 limited prints available for each piece of art in the horse collection.

If you are interested in a horse portrait painting of your horse contact me by email today. info@robertwheater.com. I would love to paint your horse portrait.

Art and Nature Conservation

I grew up spending my weekends on long drives through the mountains with my father when I was a kid. While we liked to camp and fish, it was these long drives through the mountains that I loved the most I think. My father was a hunter, a great fisherman but a very silent man. He wouldn’t talk too much. He would throw some George Jones, Conway Twitty or a different cassette into the stereo and away we went. My little sister would sit in the middle – and sometimes drive on these trips but I would just stare out the window and once in awhile voice “White Lightnin'” and try to make the funny little pop sound George Jones would make in the song.

I learned something from my Dad between the rides, the fishing trips and the long hikes with a canoe on my back. I learned that without people making sure nature would stay safe, people like him and who I should be when I grew up that nature would be gone for my own kids. Back then I kind of blew it off. I was a young teen, even though a boy scout, but I was young and I already knew everything I needed to know then. When I was 12 or so, my father moved back to Wyoming (where I was born) and I started spending summers and winters there with him. It was the same though, but now our Sundays were driving through Yellowstone or having breakfast at the foot of the Tetons.

Why am I going on about all this? Well, I have been doing some landscape paintings but I was unsure what to do with them. I have been trying to find someway to make sure that the paintings of the iconic wilderness I grew up with benefited the subject. I am looking for causes to support but even more than that, I want to deeply and truly care for this cause. I am seeking a way to benefit national parks and forests with my paintings. I want to reach out to fans of my work first and see what groups that they know of that are local that support nature conservancy. Do you know of any?

Portrait Painting – Kerry Ann

This is my wife. I have painted her several times and will paint her many more. I wanted to do something more emotional with her so I went with this – there will be a few more paintings of her and I am currently doing a portrait study of her.

Rain Painting

There will be many portraits in this style, at this time I believe I have 92 left. For this painting, I used an advertisement with a model for Indian Motorcycles. In the ad she was just sitting on the motorcycle looking up but I decided it would be a fun painting to make it rain paint.

Portrait Painting – Natalie

Another portrait in my 100 portraits in 300 days. Natalie has been a subject of a lot of my art and will be the subject of much more. She is easy to work with – for both the camera and the brush. These watercolor style portraits are digital and traditional using methods I have developed myself to both stand out as an artist and to create something unique for fans of my art and the clients I serve.

Portrait Painting – Tessi

I started doing a series of portraits – 100 portraits in 300 days. This new style I have been working with is one I am focusing on and want to perfect. It’s a combination of digital, traditional acrylic and watercolor pours and washes to create a piece of unique art. Here is a painting of Tessi, a young model I have had the pleasure of working with 4 or 5 times now. There will be two more paintings of her and a portrait study.

Johnny Cash Painting

Well, what can I say I like music. I never really started listening to Johnny Cash until I was an adult. My dad listened to him but it never really caught on until I was around 25 and then I fell in love with him. I have most of his music now. Johnny Cash’s music is great to just sit back to and work. It ranges from gospel to rockabilly to country and everything in between. The Man in Black will forever be heard in my home and I hope that his music is listened to for generations to come.

B.B. King Painting

Over ten years ago, I met B.B. King in Memphis at B.B. King’s – his club. I really enjoyed myself. Before I met and listened to him play, the prior year, could have been two. He had a son or nephew (can’t remember which was which) playing with a band. I was there with a group of performers from Ringling Brothers and a few friends. B.B. King was not there. Instead, we had a few drinks with his son and nephew. It was a great time. I spent four years with Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus as a stagehand and I did rigging. I toured the United States, made a lot of great friends that are all over the world now and well if I could go back when I was a bit younger, I would have. So, to create a physical memory of the event I created this painting of B.B. King. I am doing embellished reproduction prints of this one because of demand. I think I’ll do eight of them. My embellished reproductions are prints of the original that are painted again to give it a unique look. They are hand signed. Contact me at info@robertwheater.com if you are interested in prints, originals or even commissions. This painting opened the door for another commission – I had someone see it and want their grandfather – who was a musician – painted in a similar way. Well, here is B.B. King painted in December 2012.

Portrait Painting of Kara

Kara has been a model for me on several occasions and soon we will be working together again. For the last decade I have spent thousands of hours painting. A lot of it for free, just learning every thing I could about my art. I will be following this post with a process of the painting as it went from the painted background to what it is now.

All I can say is I really enjoy painting people, it’s a passion. This one took longer than other paintings. Usually when I have a model for my photography or my painting, I end up painting several pieces of the model and many unfinished sketches.
